Ballpoint Pens and Gel Pens: Tonglu, Ningbo, and Yiwu

Fiona3 min read

Fenshui in Tonglu builds ballpoints from local tips, refills, and barrels. Ningbo finishes pens and wider stationery. Yiwu is the showroom, not the machine shop.

Buyers say “a pen” and then receive a ballpoint, a gel pen, and a marker quoted as if they were the same tool. In Chinese factory language a 圆珠笔 is a ballpoint and a 水笔 is usually a gel pen. A fountain pen is a third product. I ask which one you sell before I choose a town.

Fenshui builds the ballpoint

Fenshui Town in Tonglu (桐庐分水), Hangzhou, is a ballpoint cluster with the chain split across the street. One workshop makes springs, another molds barrels, another supplies tips and refills, and another assembles. That is why a simple printed barrel can be fast, and why a new tip or a new ink is not a logo change. Logo, ink color, and barrel color are light customization. A new writing system is a different project.

Ningbo finishes pens. Yiwu displays them.

Ningbo is the wider stationery base. Cixi and Ninghai run small and mid-size pen plants. Beilun is home to large writing-instrument groups, some of which also produce outside Ningbo. Wood-case pencils are a different map again: Qingyuan in Lishui is a pencil town, and I do not send a gel-pen refill there.

Yiwu’s stationery floors are where you can see a range in an afternoon. A lot of those booths are fed by Ningbo, Wenzhou, and Tonglu. I use the market to narrow a design. I use the cluster to make the production order. Both show up in the industrial hub guide when the product is already one of the mapped lines.

  • Writing system: ballpoint, gel, or fountain. The quotation has to say which.
  • Tip size, ink color, and a writing test on the paper your customer uses.
  • Barrel material, print method, and a rub test on the logo.
  • Clip, cap seal, and a dry-out check. A pen that writes in the showroom and fails in the carton is a packing and cap problem, not a mystery.

Low minimums are normal on a stock barrel with your print. They are not normal on a new mold. Tell me the quantity and whether the pen already exists, and I will put the order in Tonglu or Ningbo instead of in a trading booth.

Send the product and the quantity.

I will name the cluster, the check that matters on this item, and the port the goods should leave from.
