Where China’s Decorative Wall Art Is Actually Made

Fiona3 min read

Hand-painted oils still come from Dafen in Shenzhen. Printed canvas, framed prints, and volume wall decor are a Yiwu business. Here is how I separate the two before asking for a price.

Decorative wall art looks like one product until the quotation arrives. A hand-painted oil on canvas and a printed canvas with a brushed texture are different goods, made in different places, at different prices. I name which one you are buying before I ask a factory for a number.

Dafen for hand-painted canvas

Hand-painted oils still come out of Dafen (大芬), in Shenzhen. The Shenzhen government has described the village’s peak in plain terms: most of the oil paintings sold into the US and Europe were made in China, and most of those Chinese paintings came out of Dafen. The village is older and more mixed now, with original work beside order work. It is still where I go when the brief is a painted canvas, not a print.

On a Dafen order I lock the size in centimetres, the number of painted layers, whether the image is copied from your file or composed by the workshop, the stretcher (solid wood or a cheaper bar), and the hanging hardware. A photo of a finished sample is not the same as a signed sample. The signed one is what the bulk has to match.

Yiwu for printed and framed programs

Printed canvas, multi-panel prints, acrylic face-mounts, and framed paper prints are a volume business in Yiwu. Workshops there run giclée and UV lines, then stretch, frame, and pack. Some add a hand-brushed coat so the surface looks painted. That coat does not turn a print into an oil painting. The invoice should say what it is.

Yiwu is also where seasonal wall decor and small gift art sit beside the industrial hub guide. If the program is a retail assortment, I would rather compare three Yiwu makers on the same file than collect five unrelated trading-company catalogues.

What has to be in the file

  • Artwork you have the right to reproduce. I will not source a copy of a living artist’s work or a branded character.
  • Finished size, frame moulding (PS, MDF, or solid wood), and whether the frame is included or the canvas ships loose.
  • Packing that survives a container: corner protection, and a carton mark that matches the packing list.
  • If solid-wood bars or crates are in the shipment, the wood needs the treatment mark your destination asks for. I cover that with the export papers, not as an afterthought at the port.

A wall-art price without those four points is a guess. Send the file, the size, and the quantity, and I will tell you whether the order belongs in Dafen or Yiwu.

Send the product and the quantity.

I will name the cluster, the check that matters on this item, and the port the goods should leave from.
